As a Child
Matthew 18:1,2,3,4 The disciples are asking: How can I climb the ladder, be the top dog, gain status in the kingdom of God? Jesus could have said, “I’m the greatest.” But he admonished them: You have to change and you have to become as a child.
What did Jesus mean by this? He often speaks in ways that we must infer what He is saying and look at the pattern of His teachings to understand. What childish traits should I want to emulate?
Psalm 33:8 Awe and wonder.
Matthew 6:26,27 Lack of worry.
Children are small and needy. They are simple. They trust and don’t hold grudges. They love to learn and are willing to try again. See others with innocence, without prejudice. They like to mimic their parents and have confidence their parents will provide for them. They are carefree. Children don’t think too highly of themselves; they are humble.
Jesus also tells us how to treat children.
Mark 10:13,14 The disciples were annoyed. These children didn’t have status. Jesus says, “Allow them; children are welcome and valuable.” Do I see children in my life the same way? This can impact a child for the rest of their life. Am I showing interest, patience, and love?
Colossians 3:12 Do I encourage families? Do I have patience for all children? This includes teens, whether they are claiming to be a Christian or not.
Proverbs 22:6 Children are watching how the adults around them treat others and handle conflict. Sometimes children learn more from mercy than punishment.
Do I show concern to the “children in Christ.” How can I encourage a new convert?
Do I demonstrate to my children the fruits of the Spirit?
