Take Me to the Rock That is Higher
Psalm 61:1 “When my heart is overwhelmed.” This happens to all. You cannot choose whether it will happen. At times I will feel so far away from having control and what I am used to.
Bad choices may have carried me far away from God. I might feel like I am too far for help. This is like the prodigal son; he left and went away as far as he could. The father was always thinking about him.
There are things that take more than a positive attitude to overcome. I need God to lift me out of this place. Distance has never been a problem for God.
2 Samuel 5:7,8,9,10 David was a victorious person. This sounds like a man that is overcoming. But there was times in David’s life where he was overwhelmed.
2 Samuel 15:30 This psalm refers to a time when David is running from his son Absalom who wanted the throne. Absalom was conquering the hearts of the people. At times pain will come from the people we love the most. David went up the mountain in a totally different manner from before. He was apparently full of losses: palace, throne, support, and his son. He went up crying. This isn’t the climb of one that is conquering. It is a man that is broken. He had been betrayed. Not every time I climb will I look victorious. Crying doesn’t mean I’m going backwards. The tears describe how he felt, but his spiritual state was climbing. Does how I am feeling change what I am doing? We may not climb the same way. Cry if you need but keep climbing!
Barefoot means vulnerable and humble. David was used to walking as a king. Now he is walking as a man in deep pain. He felt every stone. Every step had a price but he decided to climb. There are climbs that will hurt. We want growth without the process. We want maturity but we don’t want the risks. These moments will produce depth.
He was losing all politically. Emotionally he was broken. Not every negative circumstance signifies that we are not spiritually climbing. If people don’t recognize me as they used to, I can gain humility. What can I gain if I lose comfort? Dependence on God.
2 Samuel 15:32 David went up to do something extraordinary. He was barefoot with his head covered, crying, but he was going to the top where he worshiped God. He lost a lot of things but he didn’t lose God. Job also lost many things but he still worshiped.
