Default Position
What am I known for? How do people describe me? What is my default when life is discouraging? What do I get stuck in? Is the answer to these questions pride and self-righteousness? Complaining and bitterness? Or do I revert back to gratitude? Do I look for hope and encouragement and encourage others?
Maybe gratitude isn’t necessarily my natural disposition. This then must be my choice as the default.
Philippians 4:11
I can train my position to be Godly. I may have started out being judgmental or negative. There's a better default.
Philippians 4:4,5,6,7,8,9 How can I train myself to have a proper default position? Paul knew this produced contentedness: think on these things, pray without ceasing, and be thankful.
My default should be different from those around me; it should make serving God attractive.

The sacrifice of thanksgiving means it isn’t always easy.

Jonah 2:9 Jonah’s situation changed when he was thankful.
I can be discouraged, sad, or angry and be thankful that God is with me at the same time. I can't have bitterness, envy, or discontent and be thankful at the same time.
I need to be recalibrated and be out of service until I go back to the Master and ask Him to bring me back to the proper default.
“In everything give thanks” doesn’t mean I have to give thanks for everything. There is always something to be thankful for.
I can’t be thankful for a victory and growth unless there’s a war. Gratitude in the midst of a trial creates contentment. If I am thankful, God will help to change my heart.
Look for things to be thankful for and that is what you will see. Let this be your default!
“It would have been enough” or Dayenu is a song of gratitude.
Psalm 136:1,2,3,4,5,10,11,12,13,14,15,16,17,18,19,20,25,26 I can make my thankfulness large and general and I can also be specific and personal.
Thanks literally means “hand” - an expression of giving.
