Philippians 2:4 The simple things, such as seeking God every day, make a big difference.
The Great Commandment
Matthew 22:37,38,39,40
Have I assessed someone else’s spiritual interest and determined they don’t want what I have or determined whether my testimony is worth sharing?
John 13:34,35 The love for God is involved in the decision to serve God. Love is a relationship builder. This type of relationship is the real Gospel. Can the second commandment be truly heavenly without the first? The first commandment starts the process. If my interactions result in an injury to another, how will others know I am a disciple?
The common denominator for each commandment is “love.” Love isn’t a weakness or shallow.
Deuteronomy 6:1,2,3,4,5 Jesus was quoting the Law, which was meant to bring goodness to those that followed it.
We are surrounded by many “gods” like these Israelites were. It was unique to the culture to love (a) God, although it was not unique to obey. We don’t serve God because of what He gives us - these are benefits - the reason is because we love Him.
Many follow laws out of fear and to avoid punishment. It doesn't require love to obey. Love is my motivation to obey and please God.
Satan empties; God fills. Don’t be afraid to forsake if God is in it. He fills endlessly.
Love involves a relationship between two individuals. With God, it requires:
- Obedience
- Forsaking
- Trust and safety
God says he wants us to love each other like this.
John 3:3 Sin cannot stay in the presence of God. God creates a genuine relationship.
Psalm 91:1,2 The fortress is safe. The love of God creates safety.
