Have We Answered the Call?
On Memorial Day, we remember those who answered the call to serve and have given their lives for a worthwhile cause. Likewise, a call goes out to everyone from God to follow Him.
Mark 1:16,17,18,19,20 After a night of fishing, Jesus approached four ordinary men with a proposition. They immediately followed Him.
Jesus calls people to salvation and greater service (something that I am more equipped for today than I was yesterday). If God calls, recognize His voice and follow the call. I am made to keep progressing in the gospel.
His call is personal
Jesus spoke directly and specifically to the four men who were fishing. God calls me to do something I can specifically do. Jesus found the men working in their everyday life. They were busy. Later, as disciples, they were also busy working hard and mending when needed.
It’s a personal and private call. You cannot know what is going on in another’s heart until they reveal it. God had been speaking to the disciples before Jesus invited them to follow Him. This is why they reacted immediately. He sends His call in private, but His work is done in public. The call is for the glory of God.
Matthew 5:13,14,15,16
These were ordinary people, not the religious or educated people. What qualified them to be disciples? They answered the call.
God chose David, the youngest and smallest brother. He chose Moses, who was 80, a murderer, and had a speech impediment. Saul appeared to be against God, but God was already talking to him; he knew the voice of God. Joseph was abused. Jonah ran from God. The Samaritan woman was divorced seven times. God still called these. He works with those that answer the call.
2 Corinthians 4:7 God gives us treasure so we can show the power of God.
His call is pricey. I may need to make “expensive” choices. The disciples were called to leave what they knew. Their lives changed dramatically and they all ended up dying for the cause of the Gospel.
His call is profound
Jesus used words the four men understood: fishers of men. The call brought changes.
What is God calling me to do? When I answer His call, he gives me something with eternal value. Often it will have an impact on others.
Where am I laying up treasure? God will equip me to share this eternal treasure with others.
