We are living in troubled times. During times like these, people turn to God for help. Some feel like the Lord is hard to reach, that he is far off. However the apostle Paul wrote to the Christians at Roman, that we can find comfort and hope through the scriptures.

"For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope." Romans 15:4

So how does a person find the comfort of the scriptures Paul refers to? Well, first, we must believe in Jesus and believe that he can help us.

"But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him." Hebrews 11:6

Two of Jesus' disciples were troubled by the things that were happening. As they talked to one another they said, “we trusted Jesus would redeem Israel." Jesus had been crucified and maybe they thought it looked like he had failed. They were expressing their doubts about what he said he would do. So when Jesus came walking alongside them, they didn’t recognize him at first.

"…And they talked together of all these things which had happened. And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them. But their eyes were holden that they should not know him. And he said…What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are sad?…Cleopas, answering said unto him, Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days? And he said…What things? And they said unto him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word…And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him. But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, today is the third day since these things were done." Luke 24:13-21

The disciples were feeling hopeless. However, after they spent time with Jesus–“sat at meat,” their eyes were opened to know the scriptures. We must spend time seeking the Lord by studying the scriptures. As we study, we need to believe and accept the bread and meat of the scriptures (God’s word). Jesus blesses this spiritual bread and meat that we need for our soul–our inner spiritual self. This is when he reveals himself to us.

"…O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory? And beginning at Moses…he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself. And they drew nigh…whither they went: and he made as though he would have gone further. But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went…with them. And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them. And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished… And they said…Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us…and while he opened to us the scriptures? Luke 24:25-32

Jesus is the only door to be saved from our sins. He is the shepherd who feeds and comforts us with His word.
"I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture." John 10:9

In the revelation of Jesus to the apostle John, Jesus holds the key to open the door to the kingdom. He reveals that we must obey his word for the door to be open for us.

"…These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth; I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name." Revelation 3:7-8

We can’t deny the Lord by our actions if we want to find the comfort of the scriptures. Our soul needs to be healed by repenting of our sinful way and being blessed with salvation. Then we’ll find comfort and refreshing for our spirit!

"The God of Abraham…glorified his Son Jesus; whom ye delivered up, and denied him in the presence of Pilate, when he was determined to let him go. But ye denied the Holy One…desired a murderer to be granted unto you; And killed the Prince of life, whom God hath raised from the dead…I wot that through ignorance ye did it…But those things…God before had shewed by…his prophets, that Christ should suffer, he hath so fulfilled. Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from…the Lord…" Acts 3:13-19
