A "witness" means someone or something that bears testimony to the truthfulness of a statement, or to the occurrence of a happening.
In the bible it says, "And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness...." Revelation 1:5
"If we receive witness of men, the witness of God is greater; for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son." 1 John 5:9
The witness of God:
"And there are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit, and the water and the blood: and these three agree in one." 1 John 5:8
If we bear witness of these three, then we are the witnesses of God.
"He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself" 1 John 5:10
We can be assured that we have the witness in ourselves.
People say well I have been baptized, or I have the Spirit. Or some may testify when asked that they have all of these: however, Gods spirit will testify whether you do or don't. ("And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth." 1 John 5:6 ) You can ask yourselves: "do I really have the blood?" Not just claiming it, but really - has the blood washed you from every sinful stain and now you are living a life free from sin? How about the witness of the water: have you been, and are you being washed by the water of His word? How about the Spirit, the comforter: do you really have him in you and are walking in His way?
To be a witness, you have to really either see it or have had it happen to you. Then you are a real witness.
When a car accident happens and someone witnesses about it, its because they either saw it or were involved in the accident.
That's the same way it is with God. We are witnesses. We have received from God His true witness.
When I got saved, I received the free pardon of my sins. I witnessed it. It happened to me.
When God gave me His Holy Spirit, at first I didn't recognize it, but afterwards walking through life I recognized that I was living holy. I was staying away from the sinful things of this life, which takes Gods Holy Spirit. I was acting the way God would have to me to act, and that takes Gods Holy Spirit. We cannot do it on our own. If we could, I would have been doing it before I had received the witness.
The water witnesses: being baptized as a testimony of a new life in Christ Jesus, and also us following His word.
Studying about being a "witness" is a blessing. I want to always be a true witness of God.
