Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: 1 Peter 5:8

The enemy of our soul is out for every one of us. We are in a strong battle. The Devil doesn’t care what tactic he uses against us. Just as long as he feels like he can get us that is what his ultimate goal is. The warning is that every one of us needs to be aware of the tactics of the enemy. God doesn’t want us to be ignorant of the enemy’s devices.

Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness. 2 Peter 3:17

What are some of the tactics of the enemy of our soul? Some of his tactics are busyness, imagination, discouragement, accusations, and carelessness. The devices of the enemy are tricky. The Devil isn’t straightforward with what he does, it is always underhanded. His tactics are tricky and cunning and sly, subtle, using deceit. The Devil is a liar. There is not one thing that the Devil says that is the truth.

Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. John 8:44

Is there any truth in the Devil? There is no truth in the Devil. You need to make sure that registers really well. When the Devil confronted Eve, he was trying to twist the truth. He said that God didn’t really mean exactly what he had said. The Devil isn’t any different today. He will try to twist the truth to cause us to believe a lie instead of believing it just like God said.

The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. John 10:10

The thief, which is the Devil, is there to steal, kill, and destroy. He is going to do it any way that he can. That is why we must be on our guard. The only way that we can be on guard is to have on the whole armor of God. If we don’t have the whole armor on, the enemy will find a way to get at us.

Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints; Ephesians 6:10-18

There isn’t any way that you can win over the Devil by yourself. You can’t make a truce with the enemy. You can’t make a covenant with the enemy and think that you will somehow win. We have to be strong in the power of God and not in ourselves. Our victory depends on who our captain is. If we think that we can be our own captain and overcome whatever the enemy comes against us with, we will fail. We have to be strong in the Lord and the power of his might and not our own. A lot of people have thought that they can handle things by themselves. Have you ever heard that? A lot of people are trying to handle things by themselves and they fail. God wants us to lean over on him. Who is our captain anyway? Jesus is our captain.
