And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: "Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess. And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted." Luke 18:9-14 |

There were present at that season some that told him of the Galilaeans, whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. And Jesus answering said unto them, Suppose ye that these Galilaeans were sinners above all the Galilaeans, because they suffered such things? I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. Or those eighteen, upon whom the tower in Siloam fell, and slew them, think ye that they were sinners above all men that dwelt in Jerusalem? I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. Luke 13:1-5

Around the Church of God we may sometimes take the subject of repentance for granted, but it is of crucial importance. Modern day religion doesn't even really think of it, in the true definition. Repentance is a real turning, a definite break from sin, a real commitment to God, and a real brokenness of heart. Even after we have been saved, there will be things God shows us that we need to grow in or change: and with an earnest heart, we need to take care of it right away. |

Repentance is needed even from religious notions. When Christ came, he gave us the ability to know him personally so we really could obtain and keep salvation. Idols are something that are not God, but that selfish minded people worship because the idol will not hold them accountable to truth. People often treat God as if he were just a stone statue, or like another person. They think that their relationship with God can be like it is with an idol or person: "out of sight, out of mind"; that God is not omnipotent or all seeing and knowing. |

To enter into, and forward in the things of God, we first need to have a contrite and repentant heart. It is vital to have humility working in our lives. If your will or attitude is not broken, you will not see the need to take instruction, as God ministers unto you his word. In Psa 34:18 " The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit." We see here a definition of what God expects, for Him to be able to listen, when we repent. |

"Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding. He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint." (Isa 40:28-31)

"For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat. For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies. Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread. But ye, brethren, be not weary in well doing." (2 Thess 3:10-13)

The question of weariness came up. King David was weary. He should have been in battle, but he stayed home and got into spiritual trouble. How do we avoid the weariness that comes with the trial, with the conflict, with life? Many in our class have been in the congregation for over 20 years, but over time a weariness can start to creep in.

"No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. "Ye cannot serve God and mammon."
