I. Self Denial as taught in the scripture includes
    1. Denying ungodliness and worldly lusts.
Titus 2:11-12
For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;
    2. Abstaining from fleshly lusts by living temperate lives.
1 Peter 2:11
Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;

Galatians. 5:22,23
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
    3. Crucifying the flesh.
Galatians 5:24
And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.
    Before we were saved we were led by the flesh, whatever the flesh wanted the flesh got, we permitted ourselves to indulge in mostly what the flesh wanted. If the flesh said jump we jumped, if the flesh said spend, we went in debt, we didn’t pray about it, we just did it because the flesh through affections and lusts required it and we didn’t know any better. But when we became the servants of Christ through salvation we learned to deny and crucify the flesh. We must continue to crucify the flesh, as long as we are in the flesh we will have to crucify the flesh, if we don’t we will backslide.
    Paul said I die daily, he means he dies out to the flesh or crucifies the flesh every day. We must do the same.

4. Keeping the appetites and passions of our body in subjection.
1 Corinthians 9:27
But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway. Be led of the spirit, not of the flesh. Use good judgment, use wisdom, keep the flesh in subjection, and don’t allow the body or the flesh to lead us away from God and his will for us.

We sing a song that say’s “this world has now no pleasures for me” Why? Because we belong to Christ and we are not of the world anymore, we are in the world but not of the world. We have set our affections on things above. “We have a dream” That dream is to make it to heaven, to see Jesus, and spend eternity with him, its more than a dream, it’s a promise that we know will be fulfilled, we already possess it.

II. The reward and happy result of self-denial.
Matthew 19:28-29
And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. And every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name's sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall inherit everlasting life.

Romans 8:13
For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.

2 Peter 1:4-11
Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins. Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall: For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
